Usain Bolt Leads Jamaican Relay Team To Gold

Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt ran the anchor leg and led his team (Asafa Powell, Yohan Blake and Nickel Ashmead) to an easy victory in the men's 4x100-meter relay race in Rio on Friday. With the win, Bolt earned his ninth career Olympic gold medal in nine events (the 100- and 200-meters and the 4x100-meter relay) over three Games.

Japan won the silver medal, with Canada taking the bronze. The United States’ team finished third, but were disqualified because judges ruled Mike Rodgers passed the baton to Justin Gatlin outside the exchange zone on the first hand-off.

The American relay team of English Gardner, Allyson Felix, Tianna Bartoletta and Tori Bowie defended their title in the women’s 4x100-meter relay race on Friday. After having to rerun to qualify for the finals, the U.S. team easily beat the field. Jamaica took the silver and Great Britain won the bronze. Felix became the first woman to win five Olympic gold medals in track and field.

Team USA Beats Spain, Will Play For Hoops Gold

Klay Thompson scored a team-high 22 points, and the United States men’s basketball team pushed past pesky Spain, 82-76, on Friday. DeAndre Jordan had 16 rebounds and four blocks for the Americans, who advanced to play Serbia in the gold medal game on Sunday. The Serbs beat Australia, 87-61, on Friday.

U.S. Women's Water Polo Team Wins Gold Again

Kiley Neushul scored three goals and goalie Ashleigh Johnson stopped nine shots, as the United States women’s water polo team sank Italy, 12-5, on Friday to win their second consecutive Olympic gold medal. After the game, Team USA emotionally congratulated their head coach Adam Krikorian, whose brother died as the Olympics started. Russia beat Hungary, 19-18, on penalty shots for the bronze medal.

Germany Tops Sweden For 1st Women’s Soccer Gold

Dzsenifer Marozsan scored early in the second half Friday, and Germany beat Sweden, 2-1, to win the nation’s first-ever gold medal in women's soccer on Friday. Canada beat Brazil, 2-1, in the bronze medal match. The German men will face Brazil in the gold medal match on Saturday.

• Italy beat the U.S. men’s volleyball team in an amazing five-set thriller on Friday, 30-28, 26-28, 9-25, 25-22, 15-9. The Italians will play host Brazil for the gold medal on Sunday. The U.S. will face defending champion Russia for the bronze medal.

• Ekateríni Stefanídi of Greece cleared 4.85-meters to win the women's pole vault on Friday. U.S. vaulter Sandi Morris took silver, and Eliza McCartney of New Zealand won bronze.

• American Connor Fields won the gold medal in the men’s BMX competition on Friday. Jelle van Gorkom of the Netherlands won silver, and Colombia’s Carlos Ramirez Yepes earned the bronze medal. Fields’ win represented the first Olympic gold in BMX cycling for the U.S.

• Colombian cyclist Mariana Pajón won four women’s BMX races on Friday and captured her second-straight gold medal. American Alise Post won silver, with Stefany Hernandez of Venezuela taking the bronze.
