California Chrome won the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville on Saturday. Jockey Victor Espinoza guided the favored colt to victory in a time of 2:03.66. Commanding Curve placed second in the 19-horse field, with Danza finishing in third.

The Art Sherman-trained horse easily bested the field in front of 164,906 spectators, the second-largest crowd in Kentucky Derby history. Sherman, 77, became the oldest trainer ever to win the Derby. It was Espinoza’s second Kentucky Derby win; he rode War Emblem to victory in 2002.

California Chrome’s one-and-three-quarter lengths win on Saturday was his fifth straight victory. The colt’s 5-2 odds entering Saturday morning were the shortest for a Derby favorite since Bellamy Road in 2005.

Owned by Steve Coburn and Perry Martin, California Chrome paid $7.00 to win, $5.60 to place and $4.20 to show. Commanding Curve paid $31.80 to place and $15.40 to show, and Danza paid $3.40 to show.
