Pittsburgh Pirates star Andrew McCutchen is usually the one signing his autograph.

McCutchen had the tables turned on him recently when a boy he who had a brain abscess that he visited earlier this summer sent him a ball with his signature on it. The boy is doing well now and even smashed three home runs last weekend, so he took one of those balls and sent it to McCutchen, along with a note that McCutchen shared on his Facebook page:

McCutchen, who was recently named the winner of the 2015 Roberto Clemente Award for his community work, shared the letter on his Facebook page.

The letter itself reads:

Dear Andrew McCutchen,

This summer I suffered a brain abscess and spent most of my time in Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. During my stay I was lucky enough to meet you when you visited to do art with the kids. Every night I looked forward to watching the Pirates and was thrilled to know you were come to visit. Baseball is my favorite sports and I was not sure if I would ever be able to play again. Your visit helped inspire me to get better.

I am felling [sic] better now and playing baseball again. This past weekend I played two games and hit three home runs. I am sending my first home run ball to you as a thank you.

Thank you again for the visit and picture you drew me in the hospital.

Your Friend,

Matt Groeber

McCutchen is a star on and off the field and it’s not hard to see why. You almost wish the Pirates would do some postseason damage because he’s one of the good guys in baseball who deserves a ring.
